What what's the difference between this "Free Premium Account" and the usual Collectors account? I registered but I don't see any added benefits...

Rapidshare is quite smart by using the words "Free Premium Accounts" just to catch more users to register....

Wow, I just did it and it seems legitimate. Is there some kind of hidden promo going on because I can get all the premium things to work. Hopefully it'll stay that way :)

Nice catch!

I think you're on the right track! We've recently moved to Antec 300 cases with 120mm fans in front to cool the drives. Haven't had a problem since. The drives have good space above and below each drive instead of being stacked right on top of each other as in many cases today.

In the old days it was all about overclocking. Today you can get enough horsepower that it makes more sense to build cool and quiet to get a more dependable system.

Not as well known, we've bought some Nexus 120 case fans, they are really quiet. We took an HP box and moved everything into an Antec 200 with case fans. It was incredible how much quieter everything ran. The video card fan almost never speeds up anymore even during game play. The Antec 200/300 cases even have mounts for ssd's in addition to room for 6 3.5 drives and 3 5.25 bays. Add quiet fans and everything runs cool and quiet for a reasonable price. Sure beats replacing burnt out components.

I'm sure heat is a major factor in many of the problems with the HP Media Smart Servers.

Drives die, that being said, if enough die then u get an idea why.

I killed a handfull of WD from 500gb to 1.5tb. Never got an idea why til i was salvaging the magnets out of them. 1 of the 5 was click head bad, the rest were click bad controller chips. When I pulled the boards of the back, all had brown to black scorched chips and rubber pads in the same spot. Decided to remove my working drives, remove the boards, and same things were underway. I removed the foam rubber pads, shimmed the boards with popcicle stick squares and reassmbled. All are still up and doing as expected. New drives need their own heat sinks, as evidenced by some Motorola DVRs that I examined.
Well, thats my 2cents... down to 1cent in this economy

I agree that in general quality and durability are very poor lately accross the board for most components. We've been particularly dissatisfied with HP having recently had major snafus with an ex485 WHS and my Core i7 desktop. The WHS is now a bookend after we finally fried the Bios trying to work out bugs. My desktop took 6 months and 4 shipping turn arounds to finally get fixed.

The newer high density drives all have high failure rates. The only answer I can see for the immediate future is to have redundancy. Multiple drives with backup copies on seperate systems is about the only way to protect against vital data loss. My desktop auto backups daily to our DIY WHS. We also have another server that backs up the WHS data shares. It all gets pretty complicated, but it's well worth it when something goes belly up.

I've got origincal IBM PC's - The real ones with the 8088 CPU - that STILL BOOT UP AND RUN JUST FINE!

Obviously, they just don't build them the way they used to!!

Yeah Samsung is not that hot either. They might have improved their CQ but I dont know about that... so far Ive had two Samsung spinpoints that came from HP and the first one died just exactly like your Segate drive that came with the HP server, 3 months and belly up. And what was even worse was they wanted me to ship the WHOLE comp back to them at HP for just a drive failure. Well after fighting them tooth and nail on the phone over 2 days I had to start playing hardball with them and slap them @ HP with 'Send me a drive NOW or you can be talking to my lawyer for breach of contract!' as it said right in the fine print that user interchangeable parts can be replaced individually. Well I got a new drive sent the old one back in the box they sent the new one in, and now after about 2 years this one slowly dying too. Boy I tell you what solidstate drives are starting to look more and more of a prefered option every day. Question is how reliable are those even? And is it me or is the majority of reports for drive epic phails streaming out of HP?

You shouldn't be surprised - most of the people who buy Velociraptors use them in RAID arrays, and cache size isn't an issue there.
